The problem behind a booking
WWStay works in accommodation, and today describes itself as a workforce lodging platform for crews, project teams and long-stay corporate travelers. This project covered the core of any such business: searching for properties, reserving them and taking payment.
That is harder than it looks. Availability changes constantly across many properties, so a search result has to be both fast and accurate. A single booking also sets off several further steps, including payment checks, confirmations and notifications.
Payments added another layer. Working with more than one provider meant handling differences between them, without those differences reaching the person making the booking.
What we knew before we built
No before-and-after baseline is published for this project, so this page does not offer an improvement figure. What can be stated is the scale of the supply involved, using WWStay's own public figures, and what the work set out to do.

- Objectives, from real-time search to payment gateways and robust backend operations
That set three requirements for the work. Search and availability had to stay fast and accurate at high volume. Follow-up steps could not hold up the person booking. And several payment providers had to work through one consistent integration.
The approach we chose
Each part of the system was given one clear job, with the backend and frontend developed together:
- Django REST Framework. APIs for bookings, user accounts and property data.
- Elasticsearch. Property search and availability, with indexing and queries tuned for speed and accuracy.
- Celery. Background processing, with reliable queuing, for work that should not hold up a request.
- Unified payment integration. One approach across Connexpay, PayU and Wex.
- AngularJS. Interactive interfaces for searching and booking.
A booking moves through four stages:
- Search. Elasticsearch returns properties and availability.
- Reserve. The Django APIs record the booking against the property and the user's account.
- Pay. The transaction runs through the relevant gateway, with error handling around it.
- Confirm. Celery tasks handle payment verification, booking confirmations and notifications.
What we built
Our contribution was full-stack development across the backend and frontend, along with the integrations between services.
Booking and property APIs
APIs built with Python and Django REST Framework manage bookings, user accounts and property data.
Real-time search
Elasticsearch powers property search and availability updates, with optimized indexing and query mechanisms to keep results fast and accurate.
Background task processing
Celery handles asynchronous operations such as booking confirmations, notifications and payment verification, with reliable queuing so that tasks are not lost.
Multiple payment gateways
Connexpay, PayU and Wex are connected through unified API integrations, with secure transaction handling and error management.
Interactive interfaces
AngularJS interfaces give users an interactive experience for searching and booking.
Data models for high volume
Data models and workflows were designed to handle high-volume bookings and keep response times fast.
Someone making a booking should never have to know how many systems it takes to confirm it.
The guardrails around a booking
A booking involves money and a promise that a room will be there. These decisions were part of the architecture rather than something added afterwards.
- Secure transaction handling. Payment integrations were built with secure handling as a stated requirement.
- Error management. Unified integrations handle gateway errors in one place, rather than differently for each provider.
- Reliable queuing. Celery keeps confirmations, notifications and payment verification in a queue, so they are processed even when they cannot run immediately.
- Separated concerns. Search, bookings, payments and background work each have a defined place in the system.
- A clear view of compliance. Payment security obligations depend on the business, its providers and how a system is operated. We do not describe an integration as compliant in itself.
What was reported
The project delivered real-time search and booking with payment processing through multiple gateways. The effects below are what the project team reported; none of them is a measured result:
- Payments. Processing through multiple gateways was reported to be secure and reliable.
- Performance. Performance and scalability were reported to have improved. No speed figures are published here.
- Volume. The platform was reported to support multiple simultaneous bookings. No load figures are published here.
What stays hard
Three challenges shaped this work, and any team building a booking platform should plan for them. Each came with a specific solution.
- Real-time search. Property search and availability updates have to be both fast and accurate. We implemented Elasticsearch with optimized indexing and query mechanisms.
- Asynchronous operations. Notifications, booking confirmations and payment verification should not cause delays. We integrated Celery for background processing with reliable queuing.
- Multiple payment gateways. Transactions have to work smoothly across different providers. We developed unified API integrations with secure transaction handling and error management.
